The Lantern Theatre may have only just celebrated its first birthday but what an end to the 2012 season with their showcasing Purplecoat Productions of Jim Cartwright’s The Rise and Fall of Little Voice.

The Lantern Theatre on Blundell Street has reached a very special anniversary this weekend. The theatre, which has become a creative hub in Liverpool, celebrated its first birthday and in some style.
The Lantern Theatre has joined the likes of the Unity Theatre and The Actors Studio as being an important theatrical space for Liverpool audiences to watch decent and interesting theatre and quality music. Run by the hard work of mother and daughter team of Margaret Connell and Siobhan Noble, the salubrious and welcoming atmosphere of the theatre was given a heady and invigorating dose of celebration as the much deserved party got into full swing.

The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists by Robert Tressell should be considered one of the most important books of the last 100 years, no matter what your background is. First published in 1914, it shocked then as it still has the power to do so now. The adaptations for the stage have been equally well received and especially in Liverpool where in 2010 Howard Brenton’s adaptation and starring Finbar Lynch, brought the house down.

Transferring a 1950’s Henry Fonda classic film to the unsympathetic existence of 21st century Liverpool takes some imagination and a lot of writing talent to give it the grim reality that post war Hollywood films sometimes glossed over. With Shaun Fagan and Matthew Shiel at the helm of 12, the latest play to be performed at The Lantern Theatre, this was more than was ever needed to show how good writing can shine through no matter how unattractive and prejudicial the story line is.

Donna Lesley Price is a busy woman. Not content with an abundance of writing material that is ready to be showcased and gearing up to take her fantastic show, If The Shoe Fits, across to the Floral Pavilion for three dates in August she also has taken on the mantle of directing Our Country’s Goodat the Lantern Theatre this week for Kick Theatre.
