The Daleks may well be the ultimate embodiment of what it means to think of an enemy that is relentless, unfeeling, without emotion, and whilst you know that they will never understand compassion or empathy, they are but dust when the fan comes to think of their creator, when Davros enters the narrative, for in just one being you have a fictional character that can be seen in the most evil of men that have ever walked the Earth; that this creature who first locked intellect with the Doctor in Genesis of the Daleks, is in every way the master of genocide, of propaganda and lies, and to whom the viewer associates completely with the malevolent wickedness of Fascism.

A species, a race, dedicated only to the extermination of all others in the universe is terrifying enough a prospect to deal with, add in the one crucial factor that makes it chilling, that recalls all the despotic, the evil, the cruelty and obnoxious malevolence that can only be found in the megalomania and psychopathic behaviour of a mind filled with absolute hatred, and you are either face to face with the foul and wicked presence of the worst of humanity, or you have been captured by the Daleks, and their foul, depraved creator, Davros.

For those that remember with fondness or indeed with a tightening grip of fear Terry Nation’s 1970s apocalyptic serial Survivors, the frightening aspect of a civilisation falling apart very quickly is one that is perhaps the most powerful and enduring images of its time and is probably matched only by the television film Threads a decade later. To see it happen on screen as part of a drama is one thing but to have it re-recorded by audio drama specialists Big Finish, already the guardians of the legacy of Doctor Who in audio form as well as establishing a great following with their episodes of the likes of The Avengers, Sapphire and Steel and Blake’s 7, is quite a different proposition.

There is nothing quite like the intrigue that a good spy story to bring to the collective conscious of a nation. Whether based in the murky world of politics or in industrial espionage, a mole in the machine is one to in which the public salivates over with the kind of relish normally reserved for the most salacious of tabloid journalism. For The Avengers, all of that intrigue is one in which was a daily occurrence, something to be taken seriously and for the listener become an infiltrator of the very best kind.

Who could ever foresee that hairdressing was such a risky business?  The shampoo set that could go wrong, the gossip that turns to grudges being held, the heated dryer rigged to give a nasty surprise, arson! The final instalment of the first volume set of stories produced by Big Finish of The Avengers: The Lost Episodes is the first to be taken out of running order from the television series and yet by the powers of great adaption and original story-telling feels naturally at home as a sequel to the preceding audio drama Square Root of Evil.

There is only one way to perhaps to finish off what has been an absorbing trilogy involving one of the best female additions to the Doctor Who audio range, a machine so powerful that even in the Doctor’s hands can cause the listener anxiety issues and a fine quirky new companion straight from U.N.I.T.  and that’s by having the revulsion of the Doctor’s most hated enemy make an appearance alongside their creator. If all that can happen in one great story then what hope is there for others following after.
