If series three of Whitechapel focused on the gruesome, the first case of series four entered the disturbingly macabre in which the spirit of fear spread by Matthew Hopkins, the early 17th century self-appointed Witch Finder General, found a new playground in which to distribute terror and in the area of Whitechapel there is perhaps no greater place of significance of which fear and terror has been housed.

Miss Marple, Greenshaw’s Folly. Television Review. I.T.V.

Rarely does Miss Marple stray into the domain held dear by Agatha Christie’s other great creation of Hercule Poirot, that of the understated darkness in greed or supposed glory. Mostly whatever deeds have been committed in the cases of Miss Marple it has been for love or lust. Greenshaw’s Folly though perhaps sees the elderly spinster at her very best as she deals not only with horrifying aftermath of spousal abuse but the very worst case of murder, premeditated and for gain.

Broadchurch, Episode Seven. Television Review. I.T.V.

It is no wonder that David Tennant’s character, D.I. Alec Hardy, has been showing all the signs of a man crumbling under the pressure when the viewer considers all of what has been happening in the town of Broadchurch. It runs much deeper than that though; this is a man who has been carrying the mistakes of others, including so it appears, his ex-wife’s, a long protracted investigation whilst still trying to deal with a family who he let down before and now the sound of a ticking clock, both in health terms and in his career.

The newspapers and media have hounded one man to his death and now they appear to want to find the next scapegoat, that man unfortunately seems to be the detective in charge of the case, Alec Hardy. For the people of Broadchurch, confidence in their police has hit rock bottom and for Alec Hardy his life seems to be spiraling downwards as his health issues are becoming too obvious for him to be an effective investigator.

Foyle’s War, Sunflower. Television Review. I.T.V.

Despite being a policeman of the highest impeccable order there are some things that do irritate and upset Christopher Foyle, having to deal with a high ranking Nazi in the care of MI5 would probably rank near the top of his list, just one below being made to look like an aged dinosaur who doesn’t embrace the new world by being lied to by his superiors.

The lifeless body of one of the suspects in the murder of the young teenage boy is found near the same spot at the bottom of the cliffs and it is hard to ignore the witch hunt, both by the national press and the local townsfolk, the latest episode of Broadchurch.

With the erstwhile Christopher Foyle, perhaps one of the most reliable and honest detectives to have graced the television screens in over a decade, being at the beck and call of the shadowy world of MI5, it is no wonder that he finds himself having to stoop to a low level to get the information he needs in order to tie up, not just one small mystery that he would have relished in his Hasting days but seemingly an overabundance of inter-related murders, abduction and covertness that must be making his level-headed swim in the aptly titled episode of Foyle’s War, The Cage.

The first line of enquiry is over for the detectives of Broadchurch. The man, the father of the murdered lad certainly had something to hide but it wasn’t the taking of his son’s life. It certainly would have been far too easy for Chris Chibnall to go down that route and have suspicion hang over Andrew Buchan’s character for the next few weeks.

When does the line blur between faith, science and protecting the law? In the final episode of the latest, perhaps the final series, of Lewis deals with dark question and like any question of faith, whether it is in a spiritual being, the answers in laboratory or what you know is your duty in protecting the public is all brought to bear as the man of faith, Hathaway, starts to question his belief in at least two of the facets of truth in Intelligent Design.
