The inevitable love child of The Truman Show and Tron, with more than a little help in being raised by the house of mouse; and yet despite having the backing, the insight and imagination, as well as the decades in the advancement in studio techniques to pull of such a daring story, Free Guy does not have the same appeal to all as its more illustrious parents had when they first hit the cinema screens.

Just when you thought a franchise had no chance of recovery, from out of the darkness comes a different type of light, not one controlled by The Force, but one of actual in-depth characterisation, of thought-provoking subplots and two leads to whom have arguably become one of the great partnerships captured on screen for a long time.

It is a startling and sober fact of life that there will always be people that will not only toe the party line, but actively and resolutely be so brainwashed by rhetoric that they cannot see the words used for what they are, lies, insidious and deceptive, full of fire and brimstone, but hollow, meaningless, insufferably filled with hate, consumed by madness.

Norse mythology is such that it gets overlooked in the modern world in favour of a more fashionable awareness of modern possibilities, political issues and our place in the world. It is not only Norse that suffers, even now looking say at British history in the history of the Roman occupation can lead to sneers of derision in some quarters, people, perhaps understandably, forgetting that the way we are now is because of the stories passed down in myth and legend, Roman, Greek, Egyptian, Native American, Inuit or even Norse, they play a part in the way we view heroes and evil in the world.

In Sam Neil the cinema has had one of strongest and most consistent actors of the last 50 years, a man who can easily transfer himself between the rigours of being part of a great film and the sideshow that television sometimes provides. It has always been something of an honour to watch his complex character unfold, and even in films that haven’t quite hit the mark, he still retains that genuine affection from the forgiving cinema goer.
