It has almost become a cliche of its own making, the lockdown, our times concentrated on finding ways to express ourselves without exposing the soul to danger, the mind to harm, the flesh to the invisible barbs hiding in the sunlight; we seek a connection with a deeper and more substantial meaning than just the quick peck on the cheek from life, the thumbs up from a distance and the instant relay of communication from the modern mobile phone; in short we need, in fact we should insist, that life means More Than A One Night Stand.

Sunjay, Devil Came Calling. Album Review.

When the Devil Came Calling is when perhaps you should have paid more attention. For some the celestial siren plea is not enough to bring on the sweat of inspiration, it takes a deeper growl in which to stir the human body to find the place where their perception of artistry is at its most beautiful, scintillating and achingly sublime. For Robert Johnson it was the apparent meeting on a crossroads, for many an artist it is perhaps a reflection of what the muse can lead them to in terms of obsession, of the darker side of their personality; sometimes we need to listen to the voice that offers a moment of explosive excellence in return for a little piece of our soul.

Rome wasn’t built in a day and yet for all intense purposes the cracks that reside in that fair city have long been established, the crowded Piazzas, the overwhelming hustle of one of the most visited capitals on Earth long since been discussed and the history that bares down upon its dry soil, the magnitude of expectation that sees the past swallow at times the present, at times all but dust in the wake of Time’s shadow.
