Richard Thompson, 13 Rivers. Album Review.

Liverpool Sound and Vision Rating 9/10

For some the storm never appears, they sit waiting for a sign of thunder, of the spark of lightning to reach out to the Earth, before they start to write, to create, or even seek shelter. The storm from within, the gathering of words that play in the mind, it is almost as if the swell of distant tidal storm is racing down through the mind and to the fingers, that 13 Rivers have found a way to merge, to burst open the inventive, original mind and release an abundance of near-perfection out into the world. In folk legend Richard Thompson, it takes more than a mile wide damn to stop the flood of 13 Rivers from achieving his goal.

For many, Richard Thompson is the voice of the bereft and the forgotten, the loud speaker against injustice and arguably the British Folk equivalent of Bruce Springsteen or Bob Dylan. It is easy to see why when he performs in such determined spirit and absolute certainty of belief in front of a Liverpool audience that hung upon every one of his words as if following a gospel sermon and to whom as the night finished with the pulse of a musical manifesto from his long and outstanding career still ringing in the ears, rose as one to give a standing ovation that was clear, concise and rampant with pleasure.

Richard Thompson is one of the great survivors of Rock and Folk, a man who is the epitome of great song writing and who, even after nearly 40 years of recording and touring has the ability to make each new song sound as though it was plucked from a new born rose and the thought of the aroma of the intoxicating future promised one of great mystery and satisfaction.
