One of the most interesting and intense dramas to have found its way to the listener’s appreciation of late is the adaption of H.P. Lovecraft’s dark and frequently disturbing tales that were set in and around his native New England. Julian Simpson’s superb reading and amendments to bring it to a more British viewpoint and understanding of how such a sense of enormity and mystery could begin and take hold in the country.

Cast: Jana Carpenter, Barnaby Kay, Nicola Walker, Mark Bazeley, David Calder, Ben Crowe, Gabrielle Glaister, Ferdinand Kingsley, Nicola Stephenson, Edie Simpson, Robert Glenister, Ben Crowe, Stephen Mackintosh, Karl Johnson, Phoebe Fox, Phoebe Francis Brown.

The enigma that is H.P. Lovecraft is perhaps lost on modern readers, for in is writing it is possible to see just how far ahead of his time he was, and whilst the notion of his own personal beliefs arguably kept his name from being investigated by readers long after his untimely passing, only the adventurous reader seems to dare go deep into the world created by the writer.

Everybody can name some horror writers, even if the genre alludes them, or they shy away from the experience due to the fears that grip the imagination or the heart; the ordinary passerby can confidently place a name down in the column of the masters of the frightening mass and walk away knowing they have looked into the heart of darkness and seemed knowledgeable.

If you are terrified of heights then then to be trapped in a hot air balloon is arguably the worst place you can imagine to be, or maybe as the one in control of its descent, on top of the structure trying to force it down by releasing the mechanism that will get you to ground safely.

Eye In The Sky, Film Review. Picturehouse@F.A.C.T., Liverpool.

Liverpool Sound and Vision Rating * * * *

Cast: Helen Mirren, Alan Rickman, Richard McCabe, Barkhad Abdi, Jeremy Northam, Monica Dolan, Iain Glen, Babou Ceesay, Phoebe Fox, Aaron Paul, Faisa Hassan, Aisha Takow, Armaan Haggio, Gavin Hood, Ebby Weyime, Lex King, Andrew Ahula, Ali Mohamed.

There are many reasons in which to take Eye In The Sky for a simple film about choice, its after effects and the consequences of decision; there are many reasons in which to understand that sometimes the greater good is served by the action of several bad and potentially evil people being taken out and one good person losing their life because of it; what it doesn’t prepare you for is the harrowing nature in which some decisions are formed.

Liverpool Sound and Vision Rating 9/10

Cast: Tom Hollander, Essie Davis, Ewen Bremner, Phoebe Fox, Samantha Fox, Stuart Matthews, Shane Hart, Morfydd Clark, Lucinda O’Donnell.

What really drives a poet as an artist? Not for them perhaps the adulation bestowed upon them as other artists, the secrecy of their work arguably not given a thought by the population as whole in the same way as a those who follow music. The craft is unseen and so is their life as they squirrel away words like some hide treasure or famous paintings by old Masters. However for Dylan Thomas, he was a breed of the new poet, loved on both sides of The Atlantic after the ravages of World War Two.

Sunday nights have not been the same since The Musketeers came swashbuckling into the living rooms of audiences up and down the country. The French tale of swords, honour and friendship has perhaps never been more popular and rightly so.
