When you have seen the joke before, the punchline becomes inevitable…

And yet it must be said, if the joke is crafted well, you cannot but help smile and laugh, even though you know the setup, even though you know what’s coming, it still raises the corners of the mouth and gives way to that the emotion of being amused, of enjoying the company which told you the series of events which culminate in that often repeated punchline.

The streets of Oxford will be poorer for the fact that Lewis, one of the true greats of British Crime Drama, has been allowed to finish before its time. Robbie Lewis, a man taught by the best that the dreaming spires of Oxford could wish to have investigating its murders and foul deeds, a man to whom honour was all and a man who came back after riding into the sunset, this was a man with a past so knotted in the streets of Oxford that to lose him, the audiences might find themselves bereft and asking What Lies Tangled?

Atlantis: Series Two. Television Review.

Liverpool Sound and Vision Rating 1/10

The surprise was not that Atlantis was cancelled but the fact that it was made at all.

In one of the rare mistakes of drama production by the B.B.C., Atlantis finally washed up on the shores of discontent and died a long lingering death in a series that was split in two. Much heralded as a winter replacement for Doctor Who, the second series of the fantasy based drama descended to the point where arguably viewers were watching to see how bad it could actually become.

Who’s to blame when an alleged killer is liable to walk free when overwrought and built up emotions are fully bared out for public consumption? The sensible, rational and unimpaired face of judgement we sometimes are forced to wear by society’s expectation comes crashing down and in a single action, an unhindered show of emotions, a case against a killer throws everything into question.

The Day of The Doctor…Thanks to the way the B.B.C. has taken very seriously the notion of the longest running science fiction programme of all time turning 50 years old, it’s been more like several months of snippet here, a smidgen of misinformation there, the release of a rumour, conjecture, assumption and speculation.

It is no wonder that David Tennant’s character, D.I. Alec Hardy, has been showing all the signs of a man crumbling under the pressure when the viewer considers all of what has been happening in the town of Broadchurch. It runs much deeper than that though; this is a man who has been carrying the mistakes of others, including so it appears, his ex-wife’s, a long protracted investigation whilst still trying to deal with a family who he let down before and now the sound of a ticking clock, both in health terms and in his career.

The newspapers and media have hounded one man to his death and now they appear to want to find the next scapegoat, that man unfortunately seems to be the detective in charge of the case, Alec Hardy. For the people of Broadchurch, confidence in their police has hit rock bottom and for Alec Hardy his life seems to be spiraling downwards as his health issues are becoming too obvious for him to be an effective investigator.
