A species, a race, dedicated only to the extermination of all others in the universe is terrifying enough a prospect to deal with, add in the one crucial factor that makes it chilling, that recalls all the despotic, the evil, the cruelty and obnoxious malevolence that can only be found in the megalomania and psychopathic behaviour of a mind filled with absolute hatred, and you are either face to face with the foul and wicked presence of the worst of humanity, or you have been captured by the Daleks, and their foul, depraved creator, Davros.

The good old days of the multi-parter, where a story line could be really explored and taken beyond the realms of the expected 45 minutes, where the imagination not only gets fed, it is sated and not feeling as if it has been left out of the desert and wine list that inevitably follows a good dinner; all things are more possible in the land of the large and truly delved into story.

Even with Adric having been dead for quite a while, his sphere of influence over the affairs over The Doctor nevertheless continues to compound the web of time and the lives of his companions.

Andrew Smith’s Mistfall sees the Doctor, Tegan, Turlough and Nyssa dragged through a pocket of Time and into a different universe. It is the result of Adric’s mathematical genius mind that the Doctor finds himself back within the complexity of E-Space and all the dangers that are found within.

Cast: Sylvester McCoy, Sophie Aldred, Philip Olivier, John Leeson, Mandi Symonds, Maggie Service, John Heffernan, Phyllida Nash, Siobhan Redmond, John Dorney, Paul Panting.

Revenge is a dish best served cold, preferably being poured from a bucket with ice cubes the size of Norwegian glacier formation and over the head of someone you don’t like whilst they are sunbathing. Failing that, to be mastered in the form that Science Fiction adores, with plenty of back story and with an enemy that doesn’t quite fit the top echelons of master criminals or war mongering civilisations.

Cast: Colin Baker, Nicola Bryant, Jemma Churchill, Andy Secombe, Allison McKenzie, Janet Henfrey, Jessica Knappett, Paul Panting, Anjella Mackintosh, Phil Mulryne, Johnny Gibbon, Toby Fountain.

 

There are times when Big Finish pulls something rather terrific out of the bag and what the listener hears is the culmination of endeavour, love and devotion mixed with the art of excellent story telling. There are many full length stories that fall into the category, some with so much ease that they feel as though the writer has had the moment of divine interpretation placed between their ears. On the rarer occasion, it falls to four separate writers to bring out the special in the speciality in providing a voice for the much loved Time Lord.
