You may love somewhere and proudly call it a home from home, a favourite place to be, an affinity with the locals, a connection with its history; but if you find that you have become Stranded, marooned upon its beaches because your mode of transport has given up the ghost and no sign of rescue is forthcoming; then your paradise, that one place you like to visit and catch up with its inhabitants can suddenly turn into a world of dull routine, your visit now a land of disagreeable anecdotes as you understand the point of view by those always trapped in the grey where once you saw colour.

One of the most interesting and intense dramas to have found its way to the listener’s appreciation of late is the adaption of H.P. Lovecraft’s dark and frequently disturbing tales that were set in and around his native New England. Julian Simpson’s superb reading and amendments to bring it to a more British viewpoint and understanding of how such a sense of enormity and mystery could begin and take hold in the country.

The enigma that is H.P. Lovecraft is perhaps lost on modern readers, for in is writing it is possible to see just how far ahead of his time he was, and whilst the notion of his own personal beliefs arguably kept his name from being investigated by readers long after his untimely passing, only the adventurous reader seems to dare go deep into the world created by the writer.

Everybody can name some horror writers, even if the genre alludes them, or they shy away from the experience due to the fears that grip the imagination or the heart; the ordinary passerby can confidently place a name down in the column of the masters of the frightening mass and walk away knowing they have looked into the heart of darkness and seemed knowledgeable.

Time to regroup and allow the mind peace after what amounts to a battle of survival is one that is denied to the vast majority of the world, for we inhabit a world run by mad men who insist that constantly been overrun is good for the heart, that we must be kept busy otherwise we are run the risk of being labelled and judged as feckless, insolent, or even cowardly.

The art of the aside in theatre is a tribute to the writer’s immense skill to break the fourth wall in such a way that the silence on stage is filled with a cacophony of stunned appreciation. It is not so much the secret being revealed or the information shared for the audience’s elucidation, but for the truth that dare not be spoken to those who share the scene; and when this ability is taken to its next logical step on television, it highlights the weight of the unvarnished conscious at play; unhindered by the crowded thoughts of others who will only derail the investigation of the self-analysis.

A detective must have a quirk to make them more appealing to the television viewer, the moment when the serious equivalent of the comedic catchphrase is long awaited for by those investing their time in the drama, and when it appears gives them a sense of comfort, a reminder that every detective is as prone to the errors of every human, every person, but in which their foible and particular oddity helps them understand the condition of the murderer they have set out to catch.
