The Western was arguably a victim of its own success and the realisation that it held no meaning in an age where certain moments of history were being subject to closer and rightful scrutiny; the gung-ho feel of the interpreted hero and fatalism of the native American’s story not being considered beyond anything other than the role of the villain all combining to make The Western distasteful, to leave a sense of lies captured in the story.

History will only ever recall what the public wants to remember; a statement which seems to grow as we move further away from what was deemed traditional and into a world in which instant success and cheap exploitation of talent is lauded and cheered. It is in this unworthy scenario surely that we lose collectively the feeling and sense of wonder that encapsulates longevity, that everybody now has a chance of being seen for a minute, and then forgotten, dismissed, bring the next star in and let the nation love them for a brief explosive minute.

When an American summer blockbuster film uses music by the outstanding British band 10cc in its opening sequences, then surely there can be no argument that it already grabs the attention of the viewer. Graham Gouldman’s and Eric Stewart’s timeless masterpiece only enhances the power to come as the latest tale of heroism from Marvel, The Guardians of The Galaxy, comes out to capture the summer cinema audience.
