It could be deemed our own fault, the height of expectation drawn from the Nordic Noir television and film dramas has been of such good quality, that as an audience we perhaps think that any drama set in the north of Europe is going to reap the same beneficial advantages of story-telling, that the quality bench mark cannot falter. An expectation sadly not realised when it comes to The Snowman.

If you don’t understand the language then Jazz might leave you cold, the same could be said for musicals, the rituals, the spontaneity, the drama and the freedom, all are entwined in a system that may seem uncoordinated, clumsy to the naked ear, but let it flow over you, lose your inhibitions and don’t talk through it, don’t talk above it and it will grab your interest. It is in that freedom of expression that the two genres, Jazz and the American Musical come together to make something beautiful in La La Land.

Anybody can make a film it seems where the protagonist has a deep dark past, something in their history that has driven them to the point in which the audience joins them in the carnage, mayhem and resolution to come; anybody and everybody has made a film in which the leading role or the anti-hero has a quirk, a certain eccentricity that makes them stand out but rarely do they do it such a way that the characteristics of autism are made to be so dynamic and fully mapped out, explored in a way that the hero is anything but fulfilled and given absolute purpose.

At least with a new Terminator film, the public’s suffering at the hands of Terminator: Salvation can now be start to be forgotten, left to rust in its own cage of insipid pop culture and if possible banished from the memory forever, skipped over when watching the series of films back to back and the DVD given away to charity, though to be fair, they might not thank you for it.
