History could have been so different but it is the joy of speculation that only makes the subject interesting, for the time the events take place, the winner and the loser are only remembered for being in the same race. It is up to the historians, the journalists and the playwrights to put flesh on the bones and the gloss of pallor of imagination on the cheeks of the long since departed. History though is not quite viewed in the same way when there is The Absence of War dictating the proceedings.

The Second World War maybe over, the Shadow of the Cold War to come may high in the minds of the officials at MI5 but for Detective Chief Superintendent Christopher Foyle the war never really ends. The war on crime isn’t allowed to finish for the honest and fiercely loyal former Hasting’s policeman, no matter how much he would like to or how much some television executives have tried to retire the programme.

It is without doubt that it is a shame that Robert Tressell never got to see how his seminal piece of work, The Ragged Trousered Philanthopists, inspired and influenced a generation to the point that the old order was swept away and in its place stood the promise of better times for all. Certainly for those who have attended the production during its run at the Everyman will have come away with certain ideas shaken or reinforced.
