Kalandra To Perform At The Zanzibar Club On The 17th January.

On Friday 17th January, the Zanzibar Club will be playing host to some great young talent within its walls as bands such as Electric Lips, The Inkhearts will be joining the cracking Kalandra.

Fronted by Katrine Ødegård Stenbekk, Kalandra are a six-piece folk rock band that have made Liverpool their home and contains musicians from England, The Isle of Man and Norway. It is this Norwegian influence, carrying on a wonderful tradition of musicians such as Kaya Herstad Carney, Grethe Borsum and Ragz Nordset from that proud country that have made the city even more exotic and fable like than ever before.

The Vinos To Release First Single And Perform At The Zanzibar Club.

Friday the 29th November sees the much anticipated release of The Vinos’ first single Bite the Bullet, which will be performed live in Zanzibar Club 9:15pm. With a glowing endorsement from George Sephton, the voice of Anfield, as “Perfect Stadium Rock” the signs are that this song will further enhance the reputation of The Vinos.

This is the lead single from their up and coming album, due to be released next year. The Vinos have been inundated with performance requests since having this single played to over 40,000 people before kick-off at Liverpool F.C.’s Anfield Stadium.

The Vinos, Gig Review. Zanzibar, Liverpool.

Liverpool Sound and Vision Rating 9/10

As the music died down from what was in effect an outstanding, beautiful and admittedly cool set given The Vinos, somewhere in the back of the minds of those who attended Zanzibar on a day where the temperature seemed most oppressive and the sweat running off every citizen in the city collectively could have matched, if not bettered, the volume of the River Mersey at its highest tide, that this band, which has been together for less than a year, already needs to be thinking of performing in a venue that can really see them kick off and become the stars that their music more than suggests they can be.

Magma Brain, Gig Review. The Cavern Club, Liverpool. International Pop Overthrow.

Liverpool Sound and Vision Rating * * *

Norway’s links with Liverpool are un-disguisable, even the favourite dish of the city, Scouse, originates from there and it is no wonder that all things Norwegian make their way to the city at some point or another. Some are taken to the people’s hearts straight away and some take getting used to.

Liverpool Sound And Vision: The Saturday Supplement, An Interview With Kaya Carney.

Kaya Herstad Carney is part of the tremendous band Science of the Lamps. Born in Norway, a six hour drive north of the Arctic Circle, she came to Liverpool to study at L.I.P.A. and graduated in 2003. Her band Science of the Lamps released a self-titled E.P. a few weeks ago and it has captured the imagination of all those have listened to it. I was able to catch up with this hugely likeable, talented and enthusiastic musician for a short while after one of her Threshold meetings at the Bridewell.

Science Of The Lamps, E.P. Review.

Liverpool Sound and Vision Rating * * * *

There is something unerringly beautiful about the music of Science of the Lamps. Almost mythical in its presentation, stunning in its creation and just that pinch of Nordic noir/folk fairytale that filters through and gives the eponymous E.P. the type of storytelling and poetic mixture that craves attention.
