Living legends, the serious list of those steeped in folklore and certain amounts of musical mythology, gets smaller and reduces in size every year. It is the way of things that for the generations past the heroes they grew up with, that they hummed alongside and perhaps even learned to play in some honorary fashion some of the gentle chords that turned them on to life, will all pass into the great gig in the sky and leave a huge musician sized hole in their wake.

To be invited to open up a gig before a legend of American music must either be a dream come true or a millstone in which heads droop in realisation of the enormity of what has been agreed to. Either way, the only true course of action is to stand up and be counted, shoulders back, guitar primed and let the music flow out of you as if it is the most natural thing in the world to do.

When a musician of the legendary status decides to announce the last days of major touring, the polite thing to do is to go and watch a marvel say their goodbyes somewhere, anywhere, on tour. For someone of the quality and assurance of Joan Armatrading, the decent and respectable thing to do is to turn up and be quiet apart from the large spontaneous applause at the end of each song. To generally bask in an absolute legend and trail blazer who came through the ranks and became a much admired figure, even with the still dreadful race relations that haunted 70s Britain.

There is good and bad news if you like or love music and you live with a gnat’s armpit of Liverpool. The bad news is, you will never hear everything that comes out of Merseyside, The Wirral or Cheshire. The fantastic news is, you will never hear everything that comes out of those same areas, for no matter how many nights a week you go out, no matter how pubs, venues or doorways you visit, there will always be someone new of interest to come along and shake your cosy perceptions up and who will add new colour to the proceedings.

Touring with his new album Mutineers, this was David Gray’s first performance at the recently refurbished Liverpool Philharmonic Hall and his second overall since becoming one of the most sought after British artists of the last two decades. As soon as David walked on stage the crowd were on his side. Rightly so too, as David Gray’s career has been a long lasting one, with 11 studios albums under his belt; he has been performing live now for over 20 years.

There are not many bands around whose music manages to be impossibly and wonderfully timeless and yet still sound as if it is as fresh as a newly plucked rose being placed into the hands of a loved one, there aren’t many but then there are not that many bands like The Human League.
