Liverpool Legend Bill Shankly Remembered As David Peace Launches Red Or Dead At Epstein Theatre.

As favourite adopted sons of Liverpool go, perhaps none come much bigger or more adored than the legendary football manager Bill Shankly. Even those who don’t come from the city and don’t support the team he managed so successfully can only but admire the man who took the club from the depths of Division Two and made them the most remarkable and well-regarded club in the country.

Ahead of what would have been the great man’s 100th birthday in September, the author David Peace talked about his new book Red Or Dead with highly respected journalist Brian Reade to a packed and appreciative audience at the Epstein Theatre on Hanover Street.

Judy & Liza, Theatre Review. Epstein Theatre, Liverpool.

Liverpool Sound and Vision Rating 9/10

Cast: Lucy Williamson, Emma Dears.

Judy Garland and Liza Minnelli, perhaps two of the biggest names in American show business ever and surely impossible to ever replicate on stage what they have each achieved and the adoration in which they are still held to this day. Whilst Judy Garland’s life was heartbreakingly cut short due to near obscene levels of pressure, Ms Minnelli has been a born survivor despite the huge ruby slippers she had to fill and yet in Judy & Liza it was if the two women had come back together just one more time.

Wild Flowers, Theatre Review. Epstein Theatre, Liverpool.

Liverpool Sound and Vision Rating * * * * *

Cast: Russell Parry, Dominic Pitt, John Bradburn, Wendy Jones, Des Flanagan, Mark Jones, Ashleigh Barton, Josie Parks, Louise Clark, Tony Russell, Jade Oxby, Franny Conlin, Wayne Lester, Peter Highton, Ken Adderley, Mal French.

It’s hard to find a production these days that is professionally polished and smooth to watch but still retains its personal touch; the little feeling you get when you recognise a character or two from your own life. It is possible to see audience members forget they are watching the latest production of Wild Flowers from the company of the same name. However they are and with original tunes and such developed characters, what a production it is!

Liverpool Sound And Vision: The Sunday Postscript, An Interview With Russell Parry And Mal French From The Play Wild Flowers.

Wild Flowers, Franny Conlin’s powerful play about a family torn apart due to their son crossing the picket line during the Dockers Strike of 1995, returns after a year away and will be spending two nights at the Epstein Theatre on the 29th and 30th March. This critically acclaimed play looks at the members of the Lavelle family whose son James turns away from the family and takes the path to personal destruction. It is a brutally honest play and one that deserves to be seen by a wide audience.

Robert Vincent, Gig Review. Epstein Theatre, Liverpool.

Liverpool Sound and Vision Rating * * * *

Just under two weeks after releasing what is already a compelling contender for album of the year and Robert Vincent is a welcome surprise for those attending the first gig by Parlour Flames at The Epstein Theatre as he comes on stage to present five of the songs from his debut album.

It certainly was the type of gig that Robert Vincent thrives in, it’s personable, light and with just the right audience that will listen intently to what he has to say and with Robert’s lyrics, he really has a lot to say.

Parlour Flames, Gig Review. Epstein Theatre, Liverpool.

Liverpool Sound and Vision Rating * * * *

Avant-Garde, interesting, going against the well-established grain and rather good to spend the evening in their company, all the things you need to hear when listening to the band Parlour Flames. There is something else to add to that list that will invariably grow over the next few months as well, Paul Arthurs, the man known to a generation of Oasis fans as Bonehead, has found a kindred spirit and someone who seems to care about him and the music in Manchester poet Vinny Peculiar.

Oliver Reed: Wild Thing, Theatre Review. Epstein Theatre, Liverpool.

Liverpool Sound and Vision Rating * * * * *

To portray a man on stage whose reputation preceded him takes exceptional talent, to portray the wild man of British film in such demanding style deserves the largest plaudits possible and for that Rob Crouch should be taken aside and congratulated by anyone who ever worked with the Hell- raiser Oliver Reed in bringing this man’s essence back to life in the superb Oliver Reed: Wild Thing.

Cinderella, Theatre Review. Epstein Theatre, Liverpool.

Liverpool Sound and Vision Rating * * * * *

Cast: Sonia, Philip Olivier, Nikki Graham, Alison Crawfrod, Simon Greening, Stuart Campbell, Brian Dodd, Michael Chapman.

The Epstein Theatre has been up and running for just under a quarter of a season and already it has one of the top rated plays the city has had the pleasure to witness this year performed on its stage and now the acid test of the festive Pantomime, in the form of the much loved Cinderella, has made sure that the new theatre goes into 2013 with its head firmly held high and in fine exceptional spirits.
