Football may have changed to the point where many who filled the terraces after they came back from the battlefields of Europe, who stood on the side-lines as attendances dropped alarmingly as the spectre and disgrace of hooliganism ravaged the sport would now not recognise how much it has altered and boomed. However, one thing perhaps remains constant, and in amongst the wall to wall coverage, the upmarket cuisine that replaced the half time pies, sugar laden teas and copious amounts of Bovril; the roar of the crowd that declares that The Referee’s A…. (insert term of abuse of choice) has never left the game.

There was once a view point that there were books that just could not be filmed, regardless of cost, the story-line was just too complex or even off the scale in its imagination to hold a television or film audience’s attention, at least not without confusing them and losing interest. View points are subjective, The Lord of the Rings would have been considered impossible, Terry Pratchet’s work would have been consigned to this particular undead realm, and books such Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell, and ideas such as Alien would have long been left on the shelf.

The British gangster drama, whether on television or in the cinema has never really captured the days of Brighton Rock with Richard Attenborough and William Hartnell or the fantastic The Long Good Friday with the much missed Bob Hoskins    and the excellent Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. Since those days of cinematic greats the genre seems to have become too safe, it has waved a white flag in surrender to its American counterpart.

Crime writing legend Lynda La Plante has been confirmed as the latest interviewee in the hugely successful Liverpool In Conversation series from the city’s Little Atom Productions, adding to an already impressive list of guests including Paul McGann, David Morrissey and Stephen Graham.

The Liverpool-born creator of TV successes Trial & Retribution, Prime Suspect and Above Suspicion will take to the stage of St. George’s Hall Concert Room on Tuesday 10th September to share stories about her life and career as well as her favourite pieces of music which will be performed live by five separate music acts in this now extremely popular and well-loved format.

It may not have been an easy process taking one of the great works by William Shakespeare, however in Macbeth, David Morrissey, Julia Ford and Gemma Bodinetz and all those that make up the team at the Everyman Theatre, the Liverpool public put their collective trust in the final big scale performance that will be held at this iconic Liverpool theatre before the extensive redevelopment that’s due to start.

The final part of True Love centred on a divorced father who was willing to go the extra mile for that someone special. If Sandra, the previous episode was the weak chain in the five part series, then writer Dominic Savage pulled out all the stops to make Adrian a tour de force that really could have gone on for a lot longer than the half hour allotted to it.
