Dungeons & Dragons is a phenomenon of our time, more than a game, it is an icon, an industry masquerading as a competitive pastime. It is equally adored and derided, but there is no doubting the seriousness in which those who immerse themselves into the fortunes and constructed tales take as they don the imagination and furnish the creativity, and to those who watch from the sidelines, they cannot help themselves but wish to join in.

The world at ease is attainable, but would we, like the passive Eloi that were food for the Morlocks in The Time Machine, soon be fodder for someone else appetite, not necessarily our flesh being consumed, but our minds, our souls, being stripped of anything that was fiercely individual, being human.

A wish is humanity’s way of avoiding the hard work it takes to make a dream come true; the immediate hit of gratification in problem solving or gaining advantage is there as a get out clause for the thought it takes to embrace the struggle and see the objective from all sides, to take every possible move into consideration.

Forget the Testosterone, the heroes of old who have dominated the screen since Michael Keaton first donned the Batman suit, with unbelievable results obviously, for there is a true dominant force on offer, a heroine for the age and one that strikes back at the tired old clichés of femininity and valour, of fearlessness and boldness. For in Wonder Woman, there really is a hero that everybody, boy and girl, man and woman alike, can truly admire and one which takes a huge swipe at the misogyny that has been rampant in cinematic heroes for far too long.

As the 50th anniversary of Star Trek looms closer on the horizon, it is fitting that the latest instalment of the rebooted storyline harks back to a day when the heroes of the piece were fighting not only an unknown enemy but also their own conscious and aspirations.

Star Trek Into Darkness, Film Review.

There used to be a theory that every other Star Trek film was a little bit duff, that it just didn’t stand up to the one before it or that one that followed in its wake. For every excellent Wrath of Khan, Voyage Home and The Undiscovered Country, there is the slightly tired and sometimes reek of desperation The Search For Spock, The Final Frontier and Insurrection. Then came along J.J. Abrams, Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman and their combined vision with what could be done with a much loved franchise, re-wrote history and then made two jaw dropping films on the trot. First with 2009’s reboot Star Trek and now with the daddy of them so far Star Trek Into Darkness.
