Norse mythology is such that it gets overlooked in the modern world in favour of a more fashionable awareness of modern possibilities, political issues and our place in the world. It is not only Norse that suffers, even now looking say at British history in the history of the Roman occupation can lead to sneers of derision in some quarters, people, perhaps understandably, forgetting that the way we are now is because of the stories passed down in myth and legend, Roman, Greek, Egyptian, Native American, Inuit or even Norse, they play a part in the way we view heroes and evil in the world.

Such was the shape of the world in the 1950s that it was easier to mention in homes up and down the American political highway the issues surrounding Communism than it was to talk openly about the love shared between two women, that the so-called threat of Communism could be seen as a driving force of debate and yet to be a lesbian was something that was swept under so many carpets that it enjoyed an abundance of innuendo and implication.

There are many films that at the end of the screening you wonder exactly why they are advertised as being for children, why the family, which all when and good as you want the next generation of film lovers to have had great experiences like this rather being baby sat by a games console, has to be involved; for some films are truly made for everybody to enjoy and yet advertisers insist on placing some films in to ready-made box.

Every male director needs his absolute leading lady, every screenwriter needs the one person who can carry a film from start to finish and have the audience utterly absorbed by that person’s story. Woody Allen, long since one of the masters of this art, has perhaps the distinction of being able to bring the very best out of the actors who grace his films. The excellent Diane Keaton stands out in his early works as being a gem of comedy and now as Woody Allen comes to the other side of his long career, the outstanding Cate Blanchett gives one of the finest performances of her life in the superb Blue Jasmine.
