We are at constant war with the one to whom we are nothing without. The daily bombardment of information, propaganda sheets delivered, in magazines, on television, radio, in advertising, across conversations and whispered jibes about how we would be better off, feel better, look more amazing.

It is always a cause for celebration when a production comes to the stage and truly brings an audience together in its humour and the way it showcases new writing, the positive ways it uses all the actors with equal clarity and the wonderful way in which it shows the genuine appreciation due its Director. When that celebration coincides with the soft re-opening of a much loved theatre after months of renovation and updating, then it is not just a case of bring out the decorations and congratulations, then it is the keen observance and salute that only an Omnibus can provide.

Tales From Under the Counter is the debut performance from the women behind the Idiotinsync Company. Deeply dark, in places disturbing as the audience realises that there are blind spots that we don’t see what happens in too people struggling in business against the big corporations and yet underneath it all touching and fresh.

Alice Bunker-Whitney and Holly Wilson-Guy took on the mantle of six people in one and half hours, all in their own way struggling with the pressure of the modern world, whether through relationship breakdown, loss of a family member or the recognition that the banks could foreclose on a business that may have stood for generations.

Last year the Unity Theatre put on the stunning Christmas show, The Red Shoes; full of delicate and brilliant acting and brought to the audience’s attention the acting talent of Mike Idris. This Christmas period has seen the Unity Theatre bring back Mr. Idris amongst a superb cast that includes the delightful Alice Bunker-Whitney and the emerging talent of Rebecca Riley in a tale of intrigue, daring and puppets galore – The Voyages of Sinbad the Sailor.
