As the 21st Century grumbles on and the further we move away from the period of time in which our grandparents gave up on almost everything except hope, the more the apathy to maintaining the struggle against oppression grows more weary. In some cases it is possible to hear some people state out loud, “Shouldn’t we forget all this now?” Yet stories from the Second World War continue to surface and perhaps none more startling in recent years than that of Irène Némirovsky and her posthumously published unfinished novel Suite Française.

A nation always seems surprised when a particular group who have been abused, mistreated with contempt, fights back and gives a nasty bite to those who have dealt out beatings, proverbial or otherwise. There are many ways to exercise demons, especially when it has been an unfathomable monster such as the political system in South Africa which denied basic rights to the overwhelming majority in a country that has thankfully started to reap the seeds sown by Nelson Mandela.  It is how you represent those demons in a modern context that makes a film shine.

Modern Britain is thankfully so diverse, that many cultures can thrive and be seen as adding so much to the way of life in the country; expanding it, creating something new and exciting, so much so that it’s no wonder there is a rebellion at the heart of cinema against the so called and establishment actors being given all the plumb roles. In 21st Century Britain, they are an elite force that does not reflect the country as a whole.

There are films that offer so much in the small afforded time that a trailer entices you with that it’s possible to get caught up in the hype and growing excitement that comes along with every new release. The trouble with that at times is that it can lead you down the path of slighted and unrealistic expectation, the trailer never quite matching up to the heights you already have played out in your imagination.

It is almost the perfect summing up for Jennifer Aniston’s latest film, Cake.
