Liverpool Sound and Vision Rating 9/10
The public complain of the rise of the selfie, the pose that keeps on coming in the most arguably often inappropriate places. The issue as they see it is a belief that a camera phone in the hand and the constant retakes is either a case of narcissism out of control, or struggling to see an image of themselves that they can be satisfied without bowing to the pressure of anxiety.
If people want to take a photo of themselves in a certain place, in a certain way, then just learn to deal with it, for in a world where we could lose everything in an instant, memories and the moment of the photograph taken are all we can rely on.
No matter where the picture is taken, be it the home, the playing fields, or just as an expression of joy as Selfies By The Sea, what is captured in at moment is but a second of life, the proof of our existence, and if that leads to the creation of art then the harm you perceive is outweighed by the love it actually generates.
The latest single by Gareth Heesom plays on that constructed joy, the simplicity of understanding as the musician continues the thrill of combining the light heart of the touch on the guitar and the lyrics which have a blissful sense of melancholy attached to them, and yet which rouse the spirit as if bathed in the scintillating sun and then dipped in the ocean to cool off a while.
The inspiration for any song is to be marvelled, but it is always with a smile to learn that it actually comes from the art of performance in a setting outside of the venue, and when it involves the family, those that you want to capture in the moment forever, Gareth Heesom’s single encompasses that pleasure with a sense of cohesion…the glue that binds the family together will always a reason to be together in a selfie.
A cracker of a late summer song, Gareth Heesom keeps on delivering.
Gareth Heesom releases Selfies By The Sea on September 4th.
