Liverpool Sound and Vision Rating 9/10
The place in the heart in which to carry Thom Morecroft is not only set aside, but completely reserved, preserved in amber maybe, stored with the knowledge that his songwriting will find a way to brighten the day, and even make the most melancholic of moments take on such a hue of colour that the expression and depth created is simply magical, beautiful, an arrangement that defies almost any subject that is cared for deeply enough.
The Shropshire lad, a force to be reckoned under a Merseyside sky, a gift to listeners for a decade, and to whom his latest single, The Last Day You Left Home is yet another classic example of the sense of purity in which the music and sentiment leave an indelible mark on the mind and soul of those who find their way to the garden gate of his imagination, who knock on the door hoping, knowing, that they will be engaged in a kind of enlightenment that others hoard but to which Thom Morecroft delights in sharing.
The Last Day You Left Home could be construed as a plea, a call out to a memory that left a heart divided and alone, but in which traditional artistic appeal has a deeper understanding of the emotions that elevate to the surface as the listener involves themselves in the narrative of stripped-down feelings and passionate belief.
A song that embraces regret and drama, but which has at its core a sense of apology and repentance, one that showcases the immensity of Mr. Morecroft’s song writing completely. A wonderful track, one to insist on being given the freedom of the soul.
