Liverpool’s PurpleDoor brings two of Shakespeare’s least performed plays to West Kirby, as part of a double-bill celebrating the best emerging talent in the region.
One cast will present The Two Gentlemen of Verona and King John across a limited season in August, plays which are so rarely performed it might be your only opportunity to see them!
‘They’re some of Shakespeare’s earliest work,’ says director Karl Falconer, ‘and they’ve got all of the ingredients that you come to know and love from his classics. There’s mystery, there’s intrigue, comedy, and a dog!’
The plays mark the first time PurpleDoor has performed since the pandemic, as they prepare to open their own theatre in the region. ‘All of this filters into the productions,’ adds Karl, ‘they speak to us and although they’re plays you might be less familiar with, they’re scarily in tune with the moment we’re living through. Questions about who should be in power and what we do with that power feel timelier than ever.’
PurpleDoor are gearing up to work with the newly opened Shakespeare North Playhouse in 2023, and their past work has been supported by figures including Stephen Fry and Ian McKellen.
‘We can’t wait to celebrate the joy of being in a space together again after so long,’ adds Karl. ‘If you’re interested in Shakespeare, don’t miss this rare chance to see two underappreciated gems.’
The Two Gentlemen of Verona and King John play at West Kirby Arts Centre from 19th-20th August. Tickets are on sale now, from westkirbyartscentre.org.uk or by phone on 0151 6770014. Tickets cost £12 or book both shows for £20.
