An annoying eerie parrot is the unlikely driving force in a new black comedy thriller dealing with domestic violence.
Start Square is penned by Sharon Colpman, the creator and Executive Producer of “Make it Write”, a group dedicated to staging new plays. It delves into the lonely world of Arthur Watt haunted by the domestic violence of a past marriage. He throws the dice to try to win life’s game of Snakes and Ladders but where will it lead?
“I am looking at domestic violence in an elderly relationship and domestic violence against men,” explains Sharon.
The play is being premiered over three nights at Hope Street Theatre, Liverpool, from 21st-23rd November. It is directed by Stephanie Hudson.
John Jones is Arthur Watts the lonely old man with a terrible secret looking for a new start. While Dorothy the Quilter (Frances Broudie-Oldridge) is a widow looking for the truth.
While Lew Freeburn, as young Arthur, takes us back to a point in Arthur’s life he’d rather forget.
The creative talents of Davy Jones and Paul Jamieson are responsible for the eerie mechanical parrot.
Start Square is being performed at Hope Street Theatre, Liverpool, from 21st – 23rd November 2019 at 7.30pm. The show deals with grief, loss and vulnerability. Suitable for people 16 and over.
