American Glutton, Fruit Will Rot. Album Review.

Liverpool Sound and Vision Rating * * * *

The fruit itself never falls far from the tree, but the way we seek to exploit it, too many mouths all grasping for the same taste of sweetness, explains why we have come so close to ruining the future generations chances of entertaining the dreams of seeking purpose other than to attempt to repair the damage inflicted on the world, on humanity.

The Fruit Will Rot as Jacksonville’s American Glutton have purposely set out in detail in their latest album, one that captures the heart and soul of their musical ethos and one that nurses the idea that perhaps all this was inevitable, that despite our collective protests and hand-wringing sighs, we have always been leading to this tipping point, from the moment we learned free will, the fruit has slowly been decomposing, decaying, perishing in our mouths and the bitter aftertaste is all of our own making.

It is often in the unexpected quarter that we find the bluff of others has been hiding their contempt, American Glutton don’t stretch to disrespecting the targets of their disaffection, but they certainly make it wonderfully clear the admiration they hold for the genre, their fans and the way they harness the energy of those willing to seek a different perspective than constant sniping and the passive aggressive intolerance.

From the opening salvo of Charmed By The Snake, the album title track of Fruit Will Rot, FU and the final battering of Status Quo. Fruit Will Rot is a full on assault, not one dipped in weak scorn but absolute disapproval, a reminder that has been allowed to be let loose from the rein, that all is not well, and regardless of anyone’s musical orientation, the message needs to be louder, more direct, the fruit of the world is not just spoiling, the odd tarnish of mould nibbling at the flesh, it is rotten and spreading to other basics we need to survive.

A fresh approach and one that American Glutton whole heartedly endorse, the anger is real, it is about time we did more than listen.
