To Celebrate Their 20th Anniversary, Comedy Ensemble Spymonkey Are Returning To Liverpool For Five Nights With Cooped.

Described as Hitchcock’s Rebecca meets The Pink Panther, Spymonkey’s deliciously demented take on the pulp gothic romance overflows with brilliant characters, rip-roaring farce and virtuoso physical comedy. A spooky mansion, a plucky young heroine and a handsome English aristocrat. Add a German butler and a Spanish soap star and you’re Cooped with Spymonkey!

Spymonkey are returning to Liverpool hot on the heels of their 2018 festive hit A Christmas Carol – celebrated as one of the Playhouse’s most successful Christmas shows ever. The Brighton-based group are touring Cooped around a handful of venues in the UK, before heading to the USA.

Petra Massey, joint Artistic Director and performer, said, “Over the years Liverpool has become an all-time Spymonkey favourite place to perform. It’s just such a vibrant and warm city and we always feel so well looked after. Liverpool knocks most cities out of the park by not being afraid to show that all you need is love. Oh yeah yeah!”

Aitor Basauri, Spymonkey joint Artistic Director and performer, said, “What I enjoy the most about performing in Liverpool is the very noisy reactions of the audience when they see something funny. It is a great celebration of fun and pleasure. They know how to have fun!”

Performing the show for the first time in the U.K. since 2013, Spymonkey fans and first-time audiences alike will enjoy the laugh-out-loud humour of Cooped. With new bits especially created for this anniversary, Cooped notably contains possibly the most hilariously badly positioned fig-leaves since Adam and Eve danced their first pas-de-deux!

Directed by Cal McCrystal, director of The Royal and The Scouse Nativity at Royal Court Liverpool, the production unites the original creative team and performers with new collaborators in this celebratory reboot of their longest-running show, first created in 2001, and set in the heart of darkest Northumberlandshirehampton.
