The Capstone Theatre’s new Spring Season brochures hit the stands this week. As ever the programme boasts an eclectic selection of artistic treats with concerts, dance and dramatic performances and film sceenings.
The season starts on Saturday 26th January with The Big Blind, a storytelling show fusing fairy tales from Norway, Scotland, Ireland and India with live performances of contemporary Scandinavian folk music. The following day (Sunday 27th January) Travelled Companions presents 5 More Minutes, a show for children aged 3-6 and their families.
Late February sees the return of Liverpool International Jazz Festival, established by Liverpool Hope University in 2013 and now in its seventh incarnation. The forthcoming Liverpool International Jazz Festival 2019 festival runs from 21st to 24th Feb and includes performances from musicians across the globe with Austrian pianist David Helbock’s Random/Control trio opening on Thursday 21st February, UK math-rock-jazz trio Strobes on Friday 22nd February, UK pianist Kit Downes and saxophonist Tom Challenger performing a duo set on Saturday 23rd February, US pianist Darius Brubeck’s Quartet on Saturday 23rd February, Poland’s Atom String Quartet on Sunday 24th February and Swiss trio VEIN (+ sax legend Andy Sheppard) on the evening of Sunday 24th February. Along the way some of the most innovative groups from the North of England are showcased in support sets and concerts.
The Angel Field Festival, running from Friday 22nd – Saturday 30th March 2019, is a new addition to Liverpool’s cultural calendar – an international , combined arts festival situated in the Everton district of Liverpool, which sets out to delight, challenge, beguile and thrill with concerts, theatre performances, film screenings and artistic presentations marking the 50th anniversary of the first moon-landing, 30 years since the demolition of the Berlin Wall, 30 years since the end of the Ceausescu regime in Romania, 100 years since the Bauhaus and most recently, the commencement of Brexit.
Throughout the season other highlights include concerts and performances presented by Milapfest, electronic music from Ian Boddy’s DiN label (Saturday 2nd March), a presentation of composer Andrew Poppy’s new work Hoarse Songs (Friday 12th April), Knot, an exhilarating dance performance influenced by circus performance (Tuesday 2nd April) and three concerts celebrating the legacies of important popular artists, Joni Mitchell, Ray Charles and Stephane Grappelli – Court and Spark – The Joni Mitchell Songbook (Friday 26th April), Jeremy Sassoon’s Ray Charles Project (Saturday 11th May) and John Etheridge’s Sweet Chorus (Friday 24th May).
