This October 16th-20th, world-class theatre company Told by an Idiot arrive at Liverpool’s Unity Theatre with a new Birmingham Repertory Theatre co-produced play about LSD, by celebrated playwright Leo Butler.
Leo was invited by former government drugs advisor Professor David Nutt to participate in the world’s first medical trials since the 1960s and this play is the result. All You Need is LSD is a hallucinogenic, madcap romp that takes on the drug debate, questioning whether we are in need of a psychedelic revolution.
“The drug laws in this country- the drug laws IN THE WORLD – all stem from this attitude that pleasure is a bad thing”
Part history, party wild fantasy, Monty Python, Being John Malkovich, and Alice in Wonderland all resonate in this exhilarating and original comedy. Audiences can look forward to a cameo from The Beatles, whose stories in the history of LSD are uncovered.
Told by an Idiot have a long and special history with Unity, with the theatre’s original Artistic Director of 22 years Graeme Phillips supporting them since their inception in 1993. Unity has hosted many of the company’s touring productions in the past 25 years, most recently My Perfect Mind in 2015. This October 2018, Unity Theatre is delighted to welcome the critically acclaimed company back to their home away from home in Liverpool. The cast features ‘Associate Idiot’ Annie Fitzmaurice, who is a Liverpool local from Knotty Ash. Jack Hunter and Sophie Mercell also star, who were introduced to Told by an Idiot through Let Me Play The Lion Too, an improvisational experiment with emerging disabled and non-disabled actors. The cast also includes George Potts, whose credits include blockbusters Dorian Gray and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.
Paul Hunter, Artistic Director of Told by an Idiot, commented, “We are thrilled to be returning to Unity Theatre in Liverpool this Autumn, with Leo Butler’s brilliant new play, All You Need is LSD. We started at the Unity 25 years ago; they were our first touring venue when we made our first show. We loved our time there, so we’re so excited to be returning with a show that feels very ‘Liverpool’!”
Please join the Unity Theatre for a post-show Q&A with the cast of All You Need is LSD on Thursday 18th October. Audiences can also meet and chat to the cast post-show on Saturday 20th October.
