New Children’s Show Is A Playful Lesson For ‘Outsider’ Kids As The Chit Chat Chalk Show Comes To The Unity Theatre This March.

When the dust settles at the colourful, new Chit Chat Chalk Show at Unity Theatre it’s clear that there is more in the air than a simple, smile inducing slice of fun-filled theatre for 3 to 8 year olds.

Described as “A beautifully choreographed piece of physical theatre which brings poignancy and pace – not to mention a huge dollop of laughter – to a mesmerising 60-minute performance!”, The Chit Chat Chalk Show has been brilliantly devised by two of the freshest young companies in the U.K.; Hawk Dance Theatre (Contemporary Dance) and The Knotted Project (Physical Theatre), the show cleverly, interactively and yet with a playful charm, delivers a powerful message about just how important it is for children to talk about their feelings.

This is especially true for many children who are anxious, struggle to communicate or have been displaced. As The Knotted Project’s Simon McElligott explains, “The show explores the idea of displacement and the points of departure in life that many children experience. We investigate how children often find themselves in a new environment feeling unsure and vulnerable.”

The show explores identity, displacement and emotional resilience in young children. To help children see that it’s good to communicate about their emotions and anxieties, The Knotted Project and Hawk Dance have created a magical chalky adventure! The show tells the story of Kiko, a confused young girl, struggling to understand how she feels about the strange new world she lives in. With her new friends, she embarks upon a quest to discover the mixture of emotions and colours that make her unique.

Simon adds, “The show revolves around a young girl who experiences being an ‘outsider’ but how her life becomes colourful again through building new friendships, allowing her to embrace the world she now lives in.”

This heart-warming, positive message comes across in a playful riot of dance, performance, energy giggles and lots of chalk dust! The show is packed with interaction; the children getting stuck in, sitting amongst the performers and playing an integral role in helping Kiko complete her journey and express herself.

With funding from Arts Council England, this timely show will be touring extensively across England from February 2018. With the world in the grip of one of the worst forced displacement crises ever and pressures upon children at school at an all-time high, The Chit Chat Chalk Show is extremely relevant, teaching children the essential message; that they can be themselves, whoever they are, wherever they are!

The Chit Chat Chalk Show is on at Unity Theatre on March 3rd at 2.00 and 4.30. From beginning to end, this superb family show is guaranteed to put a smile on faces, young and old as well as creating plenty of food for thought about encouraging children to share their feelings.
