From 21st-24th February, more than 50 young actors from Young Everyman Playhouse (YEP) will challenge us to think about the world we live in day-to-day in the bold, new and politically-charged drama The City and the Value of Things.

Using their own experiences, The City and the Value of Things focuses around the everyday – what we see and pass all the time, choose to notice or not. The power given on one thought of whether to spare that pound or stand up in the community and say something when everyone else is remaining silent.

The visible rise of homelessness, more people than ever using food banks, people laid for hours in hospital corridors.  All asking the question…what do we place value on?

With technical support provided by YEP Technicians and with the support of Everyman & Playhouse staff, young actors have created a piece of theatre featuring movement, story-telling and original music with all 50 actors remaining on stage for the duration of the performance.

Matt Rutter, director of YEP and Chris Tomlinson, associate director of YEP, will support the young actors in creating their work by co-directing the production.

Chris Tomlinson said, “Our process starts with a thought, an idea, a political statement, a look on the world or often the case may be a by-product of a previous show.

We aim to produce a piece that can let the members of YEP’s voices be heard. It’s all their own work, the characters on stage have been entirely made by them and the words used sculpted and delivered by them. We have by the end a collection of stories and scenes that are learnt shared and passed on through the company so there is a joint ownership and belonging.”

Young Everyman Playhouse is an award-winning youth arts programme providing opportunities for young people aged 14 to 25, no matter their circumstances. The programme has six different strands – actors, directors, marketers, producers, technicians and writers.

The City and the Value of Things follows in the tradition of previous YEP productions that have stormed the Everyman stage tackling the environment, politics, corruption and technology – The Environmentalists, Until They Kick Us Out, The Establishment and The Grid.
