Following their hedonistic version of The Bacchae in the summer, Young Everyman Playhouse (YEP) invites audiences to fall in to The Wonderful World of Dissocia as they present Antony Neilson’s dazzlingly colourful play in the Playhouse Studio from Tuesday 4th to Saturday 7th November.
Lisa Jones is on a journey. It’s a colourful and exciting off-kilter trip in search of one lost hour that has tipped the balance of her life. The inhabitants of the wonderful world she finds herself in – Dissocia – are a curious blend of the funny, the friendly and the brutal.
Neilson’s play asks: What if you were to lose an hour from your day? That’s 371 hours from your year, or 1252 days taken from your entire life and the only way to get it back was to travel Dissocia.
The award-winning YEP take the stage after the success of The Bacchae and Until They Kick Us Out earlier this year with a cast of 15 actors for what promises to be a unique theatrical experience full of dark humour, music and adventure.
Talking about the play Anthony Neilson said:“If you like Alice in Wonderland but there’s not enough sex and violence in it, then Dissocia is the show for you.”
A creator of pioneering, taboo-breaking new work, Anthony Neilson writes and directs bold plays that explore unchartered psychological territories. The Wonderful World of Dissocia is an honest and raw look at mental health, exploring what it means and feels to live with mental illness leaving you with questions about how we treat it as a society.
Using YEP’s unique multi-disciplinary approach, The Wonderful World of Dissocia has lighting and sound by YEP Technicians, YEP Director Ellie Hurt is assistant director, the play is produced by E&P’s Assistant Producer Michelle Grant – a recent YEP Producer graduate – while YEP Communicators have created the marketing. The links between YEP and LIPA can also be seen with LIPA students designing the play, sound design and providing stage management backstage.
The Wonderful World of Dissociais directed by YEP Associate Director Chris Tomlinson whose previous credits for YEP include The Bacchae and Wind in the Willows and co-directing The Grid, Intimate and Papertown. He previously directed Frankenstein for the Everyman Youth Theatre as well as Next! at the Unity Theatre and Jason & The Argonauts and The Musketeers for Off The Ground.
Chris Tomlinson said: “This has been one of the most challenging plays YEP has taken on. Not only for its content and themes, but the theatrical style in which the young actors are having to engage with and the configuration of the studio space. YEP aims to push and challenge these exceptional young people, from design, tech and the final play we see on stage and I’m very excited about the way the young people are rising to that challenge.”
