Liverpool welcomes the return of visionary rock musician and musicologist Julian Cope as he announces a date at the city’s Epstein Theatre on Thursday 5th February 2015 promising fans an evening of music spanning a career of 30 years.
Cope was the one-time front man of Liverpool band The Teardrop Explodes but musical output is only one facet to this singer, poet, occultist and photographer’s work. His best-selling tome The Modern Antiquarian, a full colour 484-page hardback and follow-up The Megalithic European were the result of eight years of research into lost stone temples and ancient monuments.
He has gone on to release over twenty solo albums, countless collaborative projects and six acclaimed books including his autobiography Head-On and One Three One, his 2014 debut novel to which received ecstatic reviews.
Starting his career in 1977 as bass player in the short-lived punk group The Crucial Three, alongside future Echo & The Bunnymen singer Ian McCulloch, Cope then went on to front The Teardrop Explodes in 1978, enjoying a four year reign as a Top Ten chart act with albums Kilimanjaro and Wilder. He also had a successful solo career with singles including World Shut Your Mouth.
After a hiatus away from the rock ‘n’ roll business to focus on other projects, he made a comeback to the music industry. Forming a number of new bands including proto-metal power trio Brain Donor, and, after the tremendous acclaim from solo album Black Sheep in 2008 has since gone on to form a band of the same name. In 2009 Black Sheep released the massive double-LP Kiss My Sweet Apocalypse as well as further successes with 2012’s Psychedelic Revolution and 2013’s Revolutionary Suicide.
The tour follows the release a new ‘Best Of’ compilation covering the years 1999-2014 entitled Trip Advizor. This was one the most prolific periods of his 30-year career in the rock business which not only saw Cope unleash a series of superb solo albums but also saw him collaborating with Sunn0))) and recording with proto-metal power trio Brain Donor.
