Following a critically acclaimed, award-winning run last year in the Sheffield Studio, Sheffield Theatre Artistic Director Daniel Evans’ production of Tim Firth’s fast-moving, laugh-out-loud and hugely moving new musical This Is My Family comes to the Liverpool Playhouse from Tuesday 4th to Saturday 8th November.
The new musical from the writer of Flint Street Nativity goes to the heart of the question: what exactly is the point of family in the modern age? Tim Firth’s hilarious and heartwarming show won the U.K. Theatre Award for Best Musical Production.
This is my family. That was the competition. All Nicky had to do was describe her family and she could win a dream holiday. O.K., so she lied through her teeth and made them all sound perfect, but who cares!? She won! She could take them to Rio! To Florida! Acapulco! Instead, thirteen year-old Nicky Perry chooses pretty much the last holiday her family was expecting.
Wirral born Tim Firth’s work includes both screen and stage adaptations of Flint Street Nativity and Calendar Girls, for theatre he has written Sign of the Times and Neville’s Island, and for film Kinky Boots and Blackball. The smash hit production of The Flint Street Nativity premiered at the Playhouse in 2006, and was revived the following year due to its success.
Clare Burt (London Road, National Theatre), Bill Champion (Calendar Girls, Noel Coward Theatre), Evelyn Hoskins (Casualty, B.B.C.1), Terence Keeley (Philadelphia, Here I Come!, Lyric Theatre Belfast) and Rachel Lumberg reprise their roles from the original lauded production, with Marjorie Yates, seen at the Playhouse in last year’s A Day in the Death of Joe Egg, completing the company. Majorie’s extensive stage and screen credits include Orpheus Descending (Royal Exchange), Twelfth Night (R.S.C.), Shameless (Channel 4) and Terence Davies’ The Long Day Closes.
Daniel Evans has previously directed Oliver!, The Full Monty (U.K. Theatre Award for Best Touring Production – also national tour and West End, currently playing at the Liverpool Empire), and My Fair Lady for Sheffield Theatres, where he is Artistic Director. As an actor, he has won Olivier Awards for Sunday in the Park with George (Menier Chocolate Factory, Wyndham’s Theatre and Broadway, also earning him a Tony Award nomination) and Merrily We Roll Along (Donmar Warehouse).
