Audiences of The Capstone Theatre are in for a real treat this spring with the finest in live music, dance and theatre as well as the highly anticipated return of the Liverpool International Jazz Festival.
As Liverpool’s leading International Arts Venue for world and avant-garde music, they begin on Friday 24th January with Delicatessen: A Selection of Early English Songs. Join them for an intimate evening of favourite English Restoration and Baroque songs performed by celebrated soprano soloist Kate Semmens and the acclaimed harpsichordist Steven Devine. There’s more historic music on Friday 7th February with a visit from The Harmonious Society of Tickle-Fiddle Gentlemen; who take their name from one of London’s first ensembles to regularly perform concerts in the late 17th and early 18th centuries.
Throughout this season, The Capstone will host a number of unique events which blend music with visual and artistic performances in new and exciting ways. The first of these on Thursday 6th February will see internationally acclaimed percussionist Joby Burgess in collaboration with sound designer Matthew Fairclough and visual artist Kathy Hinde to bring Powerplant to their stage. Also on Friday 21st February they host Guitars and Other Machines, with delays and loop machines, alongside projected visuals building intricate layered compositions for both classical and electronic guitars.
The third of these unique performances takes place on Friday 28th March with Shatner’s Bassoon which draws on influences from a wide range of musical styles and real time modular scenography to explore the interaction between 3D projection mapping and improvisation.
After much anticipation, Thursday 27th February – Sunday 2nd March marks the return of the Liverpool International Jazz Festival. Some of the biggest names will perform, including celebrated British pianist Jason Rebello, Anglo-American ‘supergroup’, The Impossible Gentleman as well as hotly tipped local and regional artists will be bringing unique and innovative instrumental sounds to fans from the city and beyond – for more information and the complete line-up, visit The Capstone website.
The Capstone is quickly gaining a reputation for presenting innovative and accessible theatre productions too. Sell a Door return on Wednesday 29th January with their latest family friendly production Kidnapped; a dramatic adaption of Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic story by up and coming playwright Ivan Wilkinson. While on Tuesday 4th February, a brand new production by local playwright Kenny O’Connell, The Heart of Everton’s Badge, reveals the rich history and untold stories of the iconic tower. And as part of this year’s V-Day on Friday 14th February, Eve Ensler’s hilarious episodic play The Vagina Monologues will be coming to the stage. Proceeds benefit Migrant Artists Mutual Aid, a local network of people who come together to produce cultural community events that aim to promote cohesion and understanding while raising money for migrants in crisis.
