The Capstone continues its programme of high class entertainment with a concert from Magnus Öström on Wednesday 18th September. The former member of E.S.T. – The Esbjörn Svensson Trio will perform tracks from his new album Searching for Jupiter, the follow up to 2010’s Thread of Life.
Swedish drummer Öström had stormed the jazz world with E.S.T. since 1993, until pianist and close friend Esbjörn Svensson was tragically killed in a scuba accident in 2008. After taking two years away from the music industry following the tragedy, he returned in 2010 with his first solo album Thread of Life.
His first solo effort was received with high critical acclaim. The album was a work of mourning, adorned with melancholy, which seeks its own path, falling back on art-rock and electronic elements and a closer link to sounds than melodies. It went on to win Öström the 2012 Echo Jazz Award for Best International Drummer.
His 2013 album is very much a jazz-rock and progressive-rock sound. The title refers to the king of all the Roman Gods, Jupiter, the bringer of light, usually invoked when the goddess of fate had unexpectedly intervened in your life. Searching For Jupiter then, is a metaphor for Öström’s journey in coming to terms with the death of Esbjorn Svensson; his loss is still palpable in heavy, yearning tracks like Mary Jane Doesn’t Live Here Anymore and Hour Of The Wolf, but major-key cheerfulness shines through on Happy And The Fall.
Accompanied by Andreas Hourdakis on guitar, Daniel Karlsson on piano and Thobias Gabrielson on bass, Öström will entertain audiences with tracks from the album, which is released on 2nd September. Other tracks audiences can look forward to hearing include The Moon (And The Air It Moves) which is reminiscent of Pink Floyd, the optimistic melody at the heart of Dancing at the Dutchtreat and the anthem of hope At the End of Eternity.
This is set to be a treat for music and jazz lovers and is an evening not to be missed.
