Tickets have gone on sale for the first Royal Court Liverpool show of 2014. The Court will be co-producing Mary O’Malley’s dark comedy Once A Catholic with London’s Tricycle Theatre.
Directed by Kathy Burke (Nil By Mouth, Gimme Gimme Gimme and Harry Enfield) the show will be starting in London before Christmas then transferring to Royal Court Liverpool in January. Kathy Burke has built up a reputation as one of the U.K.’s leading theatre directors and was last in Liverpool directing The Quare Fellow at The Liverpool Playhouse in 2004.
Once A Catholic was originally written in 1977 and it ran in the West End for two years. Set in the mid 1950s the show shocked many but made even more laugh out loud. It is a piece of theatre that lampoons the Catholic Church of the 1950s and any Catholic girls and boys of a certain age will recognise all of the characters involved.
Mary, Mary and Mary are trying to grow up at The Convent Of Our Lady Of Fatima without offending their Lord or, more importantly, his Nuns. Mortal Sin battles for space in their teenage minds with boys, cigarettes and Elvis. A dark comedy which covers O-Levels, sex and rock n roll, the show has been described as disturbing, shocking and hilarious.
Kevin Fearon, the show’s Producer and Chief Executive of Royal Court Liverpool, is really excited by the project, “We have been producing our own shows for six years now and our work here is starting to get national attention within the industry. This link up with The Tricycle Theatre is another example of how far we have come as a theatre, as is the ability to attract Kathy Burke to direct the show. That having been said, we produce plays for our audience first and foremost so we will make sure that when they come to see the show it is another great night out at the Court.”
Once A Catholic will run from Wednesday 22nd January to Saturday 8th February 2014. Tickets and information are available from www.royalcourtliverpool.com or on 0870 787 1866.
