As part of The Shiny New Theatre Festival at The Lantern Theatre this July, Laura Kate Barrow will be showcasing hew new one act comedy Bump before it goes to Manchester as part of the city’s 24/7 festival.
Bump is the comic and heart-breaking story of the chance reunion in an empty church between school friends, meeting now as a soldier and a student, who discover life hasn’t turned out the way either of them expected.
Bump was written and developed during Laura’s time on the Liverpool Everyman and Playhouse Young Writer’s Programme. Since then she has had work produced by Grosvenor Park Open Air Theatre, Everyword Festival at the Playhouse Studio and Theatre in the Rough Festival. Her debut full length play ‘Trolley-Shaped Bruise’ was produced with Making Art Funding from Unity Theatre, Liverpool in May 2013. She is currently Young Writer on Attachment at the Octagon Theatre, Bolton where she has written forThe Cotton Plays, Play Time and a show for young actors at the Youth Theatre Gala.
Having been introduced to playwriting in Liverpool, Laura feels the city has had an influence on her development as a writer. She says, “Having been brought up with the Liverpool Poets, and in particular Roger McGough, I have always believed good writing should be accessible, and that some of the most moving sentiments are portrayed in a deceptively simple way. I am fascinated by the perception of how things should feel, and where we ought to be at certain stages of our life – Bump is an exploration of this, but the characters are real. You will know them both. It’s a great privilege to be the only company bringing work from Liverpool to such an established Manchester festival.”’
