This Thursday, The Atkinson – Southport’s brand new cultural hub – will host Nicholas Collett’s fascinating wartime one man show Spitfire Solo. Written and performed by Collett himself, this performance focuses on one man’s experience of The Battle of Britain and the events of his life after World War 2 to create a moving story and a unique piece of theatre.
Eighty-year old Peter Walker is an ex-Battle of Britain pilot living in Silver Birches retirement home. With most of his comrades and family dead, Peter recounts his glory days as well as family memories and his many losses over the years. Theatre, music and films come together to create a multi layered performance which showcases Collett’s remarkable talent as he effortlessly switches between pensioner to young pilot as well as characters from throughout Peter’s life to tell the touching story of an aging wartime pilot. A new and unexpected challenge is about to begin for Peter as he relives his finest hour as a war hero, finding the strength to survive for the second time as he answers the biggest question so far.
Using black and white film footage from World War Two, this understated performance is the perfect recreation of the Battle of Britain onstage. Both educational and entertaining, anyone studying or simply interested the subject is encouraged to visit the Atkinson for Collett’s tragic and triumphant story.
