Tell Tale Theatre’s production of Arthur Miller’s The Crucible opens at Static Gallery on 10 April 2013.
THE CRUCIBLE, a timeless exploration of POWER and FEAR, written by American legend Arthur Miller, is to be performed by a unique ensemble cast, thanks to the creative dynamism of Liverpool’s Tell Tale Theatre.
Arthur Miller’s tense drama of principle and paranoia is to be Tell Tale Theatre’s third major production and Director Emma Whitley can’t wait for opening night. “The play is all about power, and explores the lengths humans will go to in order to achieve it. This is a timeless idea, and still resonates within society today. Our intention is to bring a fresh take on a classic masterpiece, creating an immersive, multimedia audience experience from the moment they enter the venue.”
Tell Tale Theatre have ridden an amazing roller coaster since their creation only three years ago, most recently reaching the semi-finals of Sky Arts’ Nation’s Best Am Dram competition. Mentor, actor Martin Shaw, staggered by the new, young company’s approach to stagecraft, said, “I loved the openness and willingness of the people in Tell Tale Theatre and their absolute desire to learn.”
Not only have the cast been dedicated to a rigorous rehearsal schedule, but they have also been fundraising like crazy to ensure that the show is a success. One member of the group raised over £250 by writing a novel in a month, another group of actors did a sponsored day of improvisation, and one performer raised funds by providing Reiki sessions to family and friends.
The Crucible is a depiction of innocent men and women destroyed by malicious rumours. Arthur Miller’s classic parable of mass hysteria draws a chilling parallel between the Salem witch-hunt of 1692 and the American anti-communist purges in the 1950s. It is a blatant attack on the evils of mindless persecution and the terrifying power of false accusations.
Leanne Jones, producer and assistant director, “Our group of brave actors have thoroughly enjoyed exploring the play’s dramatic themes, challenging our notions of good and evil. It is not only suspenseful and moving but it compels the audience to ask some difficult questions. That is the ambition of Tell Tale Theatre … creating challenging, engaging performance.”
