Liverpool Network Theatre To Bring Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya To The Lantern Theatre.

Liverpool Network Theatre is a community theatre group that prides itself in bringing iconic works of theatre to its local community. From 21st – 23rd March Liverpool Network Theatre proudly brings Chekhov’s celebrated Uncle Vanya to The Lantern Theatre, Blundell Street, Liverpool.

Scenes from a country life in four acts: The story of nine characters living on a country estate in 1890s Russia. They are struggling to come to terms with their own identities and the loss of social role, having regrets for the loves they never had and ambitions they never realised.

Upon his retirement, Professor Serebryakov returns with his wife from St. Petersburg to his country “home”. But how will the others cope with their city ways and mad-cap mealtimes, let alone the maelstrom of passion inspired by the beautiful, lofty Yelena? The mish-mash of connections continues with the addition of family friends and old retainers.

Chekhov’s tale of the country is not idyllic and the family it portrays is decidedly modern, in spite of the Imperial Russian setting. From financial struggle, social change and environmental danger the play tackles very familiar themes and issues, which are relevant even today more than 100 years on. The backdrop of social decline gives us the sense of a class of people struggling for purpose and even survival. It would all be completely unbearable if it was not so funny.

Tickets for Uncle Vanya are priced at £7 with concessions available at £5. All performances start at 7pm and tickets can be purchased by calling 0151 7030000 or book online at www.lanterntheatre.co.uk.
