This week saw the 30th anniversary of one the seminal albums of what became known as the New Wave of British Heavy Metal era. Iron Maiden’s The Number of The Beastnot only stands out as one of the best by the definitive Metal bands from Great Britain but also one of the best of the whole Heavy Metal genre.

The 100th anniversary of the sinking of the R.M.S. Titanic is one that will touch many areas of Britain and Ireland, so much so in places such as Southampton, Belfast and Liverpool. Southampton due to the amount of men from the area who were employed as workers on the ill-fated ship, Belfast will feel this anniversary with heavy heart as they remember the loss of life from a ship built at Harland and Wolff ship yard and Liverpool as the place where she was registered and where the news broke to the world that the unsinkable, the most prestigious ship of its time had been lost.

Edison’s Children, In The Last Waking Moments…. Album Review.

It always comes as a bit of a surprise that musicians have any spare time to be anywhere outside of their own bubble. The group ethic of a band that has been around for years must surely take most of the hours of daylight afforded them and quite a few of the night hours too when they take in the multitude of gigs that they do.

It Bites, Map of the Past. Album Review.

Originally published by L.S. Media. March 26th 2012.

L.S. Media Rating *****

If there is such a thing as a marriage made in Heaven, then the day John Mitchell and Lee Pomeroy joined It Bites must surely be the closest moment for fans of Progressive Rock.

Map of the Past is only the second album that John Mitchell, John Beck, Bob Dalton and Lee Pomeroy have worked together on under the name of It Bites, however like 2008’s The Tall Ships, Map of the Past is an album that may have been long in its delivery but the result is so well worth the wait.

All American Rejects, Kids in the Street. Album Review.

Originally published by L.S. Media. March 27th 2012.

L.S. Media Rating **

All American Rejects’ new offering Kids in the Street is an album that honestly could have delivered so much more. However, it comes across as collection of songs that sound half-finished and that the care and attention that had been in evidence on the previous two albums has evaporated and dissipated as the band delved further into the recording.

Doctor Who, The Wrath of the Iceni. Big Finish Audio Play. 1. 03.

Cast: Tom Baker, Louise Jameson, Ella Kenion, Nia Roberts, Michael Rouse, Daniel Hawksford.

The latest Tom Baker/Big Finish story, The Wrath of the Iceni, finally sees the savage Leela meet her match in the form of Boudica, the legendary warrior Queen of the Iceni.  If this story is anything to go by, both the Doctor and Leela may have met their physical equal in the form of a woman who has gone down in history as a mixture of a heroine and a woman driven mad by revenge.

Swallows and Amazons, Theatre Review. Playhouse Theatre, Liverpool.

Cast: Celia Adams, Akiya Henry, Richard Holt, Katie Moore, Sophie Waller, Stewart Wright, Greg Barnett, Francesca Bradley, Neal Craig, Adrian Garratt, Alison George, Hilary Tones, Jon Trenchard.

Every so often a production comes along that when all is said and done is nothing short of charming and brilliantly executed. Nothing more, nothing less! Arthur Ransome’s classic children’s adventure Swallows and Amazons is one such play.

Doctor Who, Wirrn Isle. Big Finish 158 Review.

Originally published by L.S. Media. March 28th 2012.

L.S. Media Rating ****

Cast: Colin Baker, Lisa Greenwood, Tim Bentinck, Jenny Funnell, Tessa Nicholson, Rikki Lawton, Dan Starkey, Helen Goldwyn, Glynn Sweet.

There must be something about the Wirrn that can give dedicated listeners of Doctor Who delicious and nerve wracking nightmares. Add in the almost lonely, desolate feel that you get in William Gallagher’s script for Wirrn Isle and the creeping music that overlays the action and the play becomes a near pinnacle of Colin Baker’s time as the Doctor.

Iron Maiden, En Vivo. Live Album Review.

There is nothing at all as artistically satisfying as catching a band at their absolute best, perhaps seeing your team finally win a cup comes close but it still doesn’t compare to witnessing at first hand a group or even a solo singer nail every song they have gone on stage to perform as perfectly as they can and then some.
