Douglas Irvine’s 2008 tour de force Departure Lounge has to go down as one of the best musical comedies to have graced the Unity Theatre ever! Its premise of four lads embarking on a final fling of youth in Spain before heading off to University will resonate with those who went down the same wonderful and somewhat reckless path and greatly amuse those that didn’t.

The Kaiser Chiefs have got to be classed as one of the complete bands to emerge in the last 20 years. No matter how big and popular the Yorkshire lads have got, they look and play the part well of a band who are at home in a huge stadium, such as the Liverpool Echo Arena as they are in one of the many Academy venues dotted around the country.

Just who exactly is watching you? One side of the argument could be the state, the police, Neighbourhood Watch! The other is the person you let in to read the electricity meter, the furniture delivery man or the amiable builder who happened to make something of that spare space.

Paul McCartney, Kisses On The Bottom. Album Review.

There’s nothing quite like a forgotten old gem to make you sit and take notice. When you tag that onto the Liverpool legend giving a new life to the tune, your perspective suddenly changes.  You can end up digging through other timeless and wonderful songs that have sadly been neglected by a society that has moved on and away from its own soul. This is the result of Paul McCartney and the new take of old songs in Kisses on the Bottom.

Big Country, The Crossing. 30th Anniversary Edition. Album Review.

Looking back at an album’s life can be unnerving. It reminds you of where you and what you were doing when you became conscious of the first notes of a debut record by a new and extraordinary fresh band. The time on the albums credits are indication to the passing of your own life, the mortality that’s attached to your love of the record. You treasured the time together, you poured out your own soul and fears whilst listening to the poetry and distinctive music of someone else.

In the early hours of Sunday the 12thFebruary, the news wires that had been quiet except from the fall out and the disintegration of Syria and the non-handshake that dominated the football match between Manchester United and Liverpool suddenly exploded with the news that American singing legend Whitney Houston had passed on at the age of 48.

There can be no better sight than of a much loved band coming back to their home, to where they belong and giving such an astounding performance that it blows everything out of the water. Ian Broudie may be understated and private but there is no doubting his ability, his dedication to Liverpool and some of the best music to have dominated the musical airwaves for the best part of five decades.
