There are so many young talented bands currently doing the bars, clubs and smaller venues at the moment that you can easily get lost in the maze of angst ridden lyrics, fading, dashed dreams and get soaked in the sweat of hope and insecurity.

One such band that won’t have any of those problems is Brighton’s six piece, Sweet, Sweet Lies , whose very presence at Mojo’s dwarfed others who would have felt lost in the close confines of the narrow stage and proximity to the enthusiastic audience.

The lads kicked off an energetic set with, topically, Capital of Iceland and Winter of Discontent before playing songs that seemed as diverse as they were entertaining in No One Will Love You, Turn out the Light and the new single Overrated Girlfriend. All of which were greeted fantastically well by those who had gone along with no preconceptions of how newer bands should sound.

Much praise should go to the whole band but in particular to Kris Jones on trumpet, who never once went overboard with his ability but stuck to the task at hand with a certain decorum.

The two front men, Dominic Von Trapp and Michael Hayes share more than the vocal duties, they seem to be so in tune with each other that their artistic needs are met equally and with no sign of any ego problems which can interfere with some bands actions on stage.

Sweet, Sweet Lies finished a very tight, impressive set with two very strong songs in Lady Deceit and Breathless.

This talented set of musicians certainly deserves more success and it will be a pleasure to have them come back to Liverpool at any point in the future.
