In 2010, the Liverpool Summer Pops was treated to a display by an all female group called Angels in White that was as stunning as it was gracious. By no means can it be considered easy to open for the then headliners Jools Holland, nor can it be straightforward to have comparisons drawn against you with other female bands that have dominated the charts for the last 20 years.
Liverpool audiences are well versed with the likes of the Sugar Babes, The Spice Girls and the talented Atomic Kitten, but for the start of a new decade comes a new beginning and just as the previous year when they made friends at the Jools Holland gig, this year, and with the added pressure of opening up for the hugely popular Deacon Blue, the ladies simply shone and wowed the demanding audience with some of their own creations and new takes on classic pop songs.
Of course for a group of individuals that rely totally on their vocal talent to carry a concert, it can be hard to keep the audience interested in what they are trying to achieve as some sections of any crowd will always hanker for the individuals on stage to be able to play the instruments and perform like any other group.
Whilst this view can be sympathised with, it does somewhat miss the point that the five Angels on stage gave a virtuoso performance that was eye-catching and it was mesmerizing to hear. With tracks such as Stairway to Heaven, Rules of the Game and Goddess thrown into the set list it’s easy to see why they are highly thought of as a vocal harmony unit.
It should be hoped that the girls get to do a good tour at some point after performing with the likes of Liverpool’s own superb talent Stephen Langstaff over the last year as after this performance Rosalee, S.J, Azadeh, Oyana and Lissie deserve the chance to shine at a more national level.
If you get the chance to catch Angels in White soon, take it in, attend and savour.
