There is something particularly engaging about the band Broken English. It may be the that four of the group have roots that spread far beyond these shores, it might be that for all the bluster and appeal of a Saturday night out in town, sometimes you catch a little gem of a band that makes you smile for no reason or it may just be that they are a very good band to catch live.
Broken English consist of Michael Davies and two sets of brothers in Ricardo and Felipe Guzman and Andres and Daniel Hernandez and together they come across a well-tailored, if still wonderfully frayed around the edges band. It is the frayed edges that make the five piece so appealing to listen too. Anyone can rehearse a set of covers from beyond their time and make it sound cool and happening. It’s when the band manage to start constructing their own style, their own songs with passion and a smile, well that’s when you know they get it and that musically they will start to go places.
Even the covers that they played sounded different, a slight spring and twist here and there and the sound they produced would have had Queen of the Stone Age’s Josh Homme proud at what they had achieved. Sliding the cracking song No One Knows and the Mumford and Sons song Little Lion Man in between their own ones was an excellent move.
There were some absolute crackers in their set. Songs as Not The Boyfriend Kind, A Better Man, Summer Days and Say Things With A Smile were well received and a joy to hear.
There is a long way to go for Broken English, a very long way. However by keeping up the brilliant attitude they displayed on the night and with the right dedication it won’t be long before they are ready for the next level in Liverpool’s music structure.
A huge hearty well done to Broken English, a cracking band to catch live.
